August 6th marks the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The Our Lady of Lourdes family has been invited to a few events in the area to commemorate this milestone. The shortlist below.
Nonviolence 365: Voter Registration, Education and Responsibility Drive
August 6 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.:
A free screening of the PBS documentary “The Freedom Riders” will be given at 12 p.m. and
2 p.m. at the King Center.
Free Concert/Rally at the Fox Theatre August 6 at 7pm:
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation and AHF Black AIDS Crisis Taskforce extends an invitation to a free rally and concert at the historic Fox Theatre to raise awareness of the health disparities that exist in communities of people of color. The event will serve as a kick-off for AIDS is a Civil Rights Issue campaign. No registration for the event is necessary.
Singer Patti Labelle and rapper Common are scheduled to perform.
Rev. Al Sharpton will deliver the keynote address.
